Will a 70-inch TV fit above a fireplace?
Without its stand, a 70-inch TV here measures 61.7 to 61.82 in wide and 34.46 to 34.8 in tall, according to the makers' spec pages. A clear patch of wall at least 62 x 35 in above the mantel takes any of the 4; the narrowest, the LG 70NU850BAUD, needs 61.7 x 34.8 in.
Every 70-inch TV with a published body size
These are the dimensions "without stand" that each maker prints — the box that hangs on the wall. They are listed narrowest first. LG, Samsung and Vizio publish a full width, height and depth for their 70-inch sets on the pages read for this site; every 70-inch model on the site is included.
| Model | Width | Height | Depth | Weight | VESA (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG 70NU850BAUD | 61.7 in | 34.8 in | 3.7 in | 42.5 lb | 300 x 300 |
| LG 70UA7500ZUD | 61.7 in | 34.8 in | 3.7 in | 42.5 lb | 300 x 300 |
| Samsung UN70U8000HFXZA | 61.7 in | 34.46 in | 3.03 in | 41.2 lb | 400 x 300 |
| Vizio VQD70R-1001 | 61.82 in | 34.66 in | 3.04 in | 40.96 lb | 300 x 300 |
Width and height on the wall
The spread between the narrowest and widest 70-inch body is 0.12 in: the LG 70NU850BAUD at 61.7 in against the Vizio VQD70R-1001 at 61.82 in. A geometric 70-inch 16:9 picture is 61 x 34.3 in, and the bodies differ from it by their frames and by how each maker rounds its class size. If a chimney breast or built-in shelving limits the width, measure between the obstructions and compare with the width column, not with the screen size.
Height matters as much above a mantel, because the TV's bottom edge has to clear the shelf and anything that stands on it. The tallest 70-inch body here is 34.8 in and the shortest 34.46 in. Add the gap you want between mantel and TV to that figure to get the wall height you need below the ceiling or crown moulding. If the wall is shorter than about 34.46 in, a 65-inch set (bodies up to 35.23 in tall) is the next size down.
What 70 inches means over a mantel
A 75-inch set over a fireplace usually spans most of the chimney breast. At up to 34.8 in tall, it also takes a big share of the wall height: add the mantel's height and the gap above it, and on a standard ceiling the top edge can end up close to the cornice. Measure mantel to ceiling before choosing between this and a 65-inch set.
How far it stands off the wall
The thinnest body at this size is the Samsung UN70U8000HFXZA at 3.03 in deep; the thickest is the LG 70NU850BAUD at 3.7 in. On a wall mount the TV sits that far out plus the mount's own profile, which the mount maker prints on its box — a fixed or "low-profile" plate adds the least, a tilting or full-motion arm the most. Over a mantel, a tilting mount is the usual way to angle a high screen back toward the seats.
Weight on the chimney wall
Without the stand these sets weigh 40.96 to 42.5 lb, with a median of 41.9 lb; the heaviest is the LG 70NU850BAUD. A mount's rating has to cover the TV's weight, and a full-motion arm needs more margin than a fixed plate because the load sits further from the wall. Chimney breasts are often brick or stone; fix the mount with the masonry anchors its maker supplies for that wall, and keep drill holes away from the flue.
Neighbouring sizes
One size down, the 65-inch bodies here are 56.4–59.43 in wide (65-inch above a fireplace). One size up, the 75-inch bodies are 65.2–66.2 in wide and up to 38.5 in tall (75-inch above a fireplace). From a seat 9 ft 6 in away a 70-inch screen fills the SMPTE 30° view; mounting it high doesn't change that distance, but the screen's centre ends up above eye level, so measure from where you sit.
