70-inch TV: dimensions, viewing distance and VESA
A 70-inch 16:9 screen measures 61 x 34.3 in (155 x 87 cm) — 162% of the picture area of a 55-inch. Sit about 9 ft 6 in away for everyday viewing (SMPTE 30°) or 7 ft for a cinema-style view (THX 40°). Of the 1 70-inch models listed here, the most common VESA pattern is 400 x 300 mm (1 model).
Screen dimensions
TV size is the screen's diagonal. For a 16:9 panel the width is 0.8716 times the diagonal and the height 0.4903 times, so a 70-inch screen is 61 in wide and 34.3 in tall. The TV itself is larger by its bezel and, on most models, deeper than the panel at the back where the electronics sit; check the maker's "dimensions without stand" before measuring a recess. The step down to 65-inch takes 4.4 in off the width; the step up to 75-inch adds 4.4 in.
Where a 70-inch TV fits
70 inches suits a large living room or anyone sitting 9 ft 6 in or more away. At this size weight climbs quickly, and the step from a 300 x 300 to a 400 x 300 or 400 x 400 pattern usually happens, so a mount bought for a 65-inch may not reach.

How far to sit from a 70-inch TV
| Basis | Distance | In feet | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMPTE 30° (mixed viewing) | 114 in | 9.5 ft | Screen fills a 30° view — the widely quoted everyday figure. |
| THX 40° (cinema) | 84 in | 7 ft | A wider 40° view, THX's figure for film. |
| 4K (3840 x 2160) detail limit | 55 in | 4.6 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 4K pixels. |
| 1080p (1920 x 1080) detail limit | 109 in | 9.1 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 1080P pixels. |
| 8K (7680 x 4320) detail limit | 27 in | 2.3 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 8K pixels. |
Read the last rows the right way round. Closer than the 1080p limit (9 ft 1 in), a 1080p picture shows visible pixel structure and 4K looks sharper; farther away, 1080p already reaches the limit of 20/20 vision. Notice where the two standard seats fall: the SMPTE seat (9 ft 6 in) is just beyond the 1080p limit, so at the everyday distance 4K is barely distinguishable from 1080p, while the THX seat (7 ft) is well inside it, so for a cinema-style view 4K clearly helps. That relationship holds at every size because all three distances scale with the diagonal. 4K's own pixels are only resolvable within 4 ft 7 in, and 8K's within 2 ft 3 in — which is why 8K adds nothing you can see from a sofa.
