Will a 42-inch TV fit your TV cabinet?
Standing on its own feet, every 42-inch TV with a published size here fits a cabinet top 37 in wide and 9 in deep; the narrowest needs only 37 in. If the TV goes into an enclosed shelf, the opening has to be at least 24 in tall for the tallest of them on its stand.

42-inch TVs measured on their stands
The figures are each maker's "with stand" dimensions: overall width, height from the cabinet top to the top of the TV, and the depth of the stand's footprint, which is what has to sit on the cabinet. Sorted narrowest first. All 42-inch models on VESA Fit are in this table.
| Model | Width | Height on stand | Stand depth | Height, no stand |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG OLED42C5PUA OLED evo C5 | 36.7 in | 22.7 in | 6.7 in | 21.3 in |
| LG OLED42C6PUA OLED evo C6 | 36.7 in | 22.7 in | 6.7 in | 21.3 in |
| Sony XR42A90K A90K OLED | 36.73 in | 21.69 in | 8.86 in | 21.5 in |

Cabinet width: how many fit
A TV can overhang a cabinet slightly if its feet sit near the middle, but the feet on many sets sit near the ends, and the spec tables read here don't give the distance between them. The safe reading is that the cabinet should be at least as wide as the TV. On that basis:
- A cabinet 37 in wide takes 4 of the 4 42-inch models — all of them.
The narrowest on its stand is the LG OLED42C5PUA at 36.7 in; the widest is the Samsung QN42S90HAEXZA at 36.79 in. A cabinet narrower than 37 in suits the 32-inch class instead, whose bodies run 28.3–29 in (32-inch on a cabinet). The next class up, 43-inch, starts at 37.6 in (43-inch on a cabinet).
Depth of the cabinet top
Stand depth runs from 6.7 in on the LG OLED42C5PUA to 8.86 in on the Sony XR42A90K, a spread of 2.16 in. A shallow media console or a floating shelf is where this bites first: if the cabinet top is shallower than the stand, the feet hang off the front or back edge. In that case the TV belongs on the wall — the wall-size page for 42-inch TVs lists their bodies without the stand, which stand only 1.56–2.24 in deep.
What 42 inches means for furniture
A 42-inch set fits almost anywhere a TV goes: a kitchen counter, a bedroom dresser or a shelf in a bookcase, as long as there is 37 in of width and 9 in of depth for its feet. In a bookcase or wall unit, the height on its stand (21.69–23.89 in) is usually the limit; adjustable shelves can often be moved up a notch to make room.
Height inside a shelf or entertainment centre
On their stands these sets stand 21.69 to 23.89 in tall; the tallest is the Samsung QN42S90HAEXZA and the shortest the Sony XR42A90K. Fitting the stand adds up to 2.39 in to the tallest body's height, because the feet lift the panel off the cabinet. For an enclosed opening, add a little room above the TV for air and for reaching the buttons and ports, and check the opening's depth too: a closed back panel can stop the feet from sitting where they need to.
