Will a 50-inch TV fit above a fireplace?
Without its stand, a 50-inch TV here measures 43.7 to 43.8 in wide and 25.18 to 25.5 in tall, according to the makers' spec pages. A clear patch of wall at least 44 x 26 in above the mantel takes any of the 3; the narrowest, the TCL 50Q651G, needs 43.7 x 25.4 in.
Every 50-inch TV with a published body size
These are the dimensions "without stand" that each maker prints — the box that hangs on the wall. They are listed narrowest first. TCL and Vizio publish a full width, height and depth for their 50-inch sets on the pages read for this site; the other 7 50-inch models listed on VESA Fit (LG 50UT7550AUA, Samsung UN50M70HAFXZA, Samsung QN50QN70HAFXZA, Samsung UN50U8000HFXZA and others) have a pattern and weight on record but no body size, so they are left out here.
| Model | Width | Height | Depth | Weight | VESA (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TCL 50Q651G | 43.7 in | 25.4 in | 2.8 in | 19.6 lb | 300 x 300 |
| Vizio VQM50C-1010 | 43.73 in | 25.18 in | 3.22 in | 20.06 lb | 400 x 300 |
| Vizio VQD50R-1007 | 43.8 in | 25.5 in | 2.6 in | 19.36 lb | 200 x 200 |
Width and height on the wall
The spread between the narrowest and widest 50-inch body is 0.1 in: the TCL 50Q651G at 43.7 in against the Vizio VQD50R-1007 at 43.8 in. A geometric 50-inch 16:9 picture is 43.6 x 24.5 in, and the bodies differ from it by their frames and by how each maker rounds its class size. If a chimney breast or built-in shelving limits the width, measure between the obstructions and compare with the width column, not with the screen size.
Height matters as much above a mantel, because the TV's bottom edge has to clear the shelf and anything that stands on it. The tallest 50-inch body here is 25.5 in and the shortest 25.18 in. Add the gap you want between mantel and TV to that figure to get the wall height you need below the ceiling or crown moulding. If the wall is shorter than about 25.18 in, a 43-inch set (bodies up to 22.22 in tall) is the next size down.
What 50 inches means over a mantel
A 50-inch set is small for the wall it usually hangs on. Many chimney breasts are wider than its 43.8-inch body, so the deciding question is less whether it fits than whether it is big enough from the sofa: from 6 ft 9 in it fills the 30° view, and most living-room seats are further back. At 20.06 lb or less it is among the easier sets to lift over a hearth, though working above a fireplace still calls for a stable ladder and a second pair of hands.
How far it stands off the wall
The thinnest body at this size is the Vizio VQD50R-1007 at 2.6 in deep; the thickest is the Vizio VQM50C-1010 at 3.22 in. On a wall mount the TV sits that far out plus the mount's own profile, which the mount maker prints on its box — a fixed or "low-profile" plate adds the least, a tilting or full-motion arm the most. Over a mantel, a tilting mount is the usual way to angle a high screen back toward the seats.
Weight on the chimney wall
Without the stand these sets weigh 19.36 to 20.06 lb, with a median of 19.6 lb; the heaviest is the Vizio VQM50C-1010. A mount's rating has to cover the TV's weight, and a full-motion arm needs more margin than a fixed plate because the load sits further from the wall. Chimney breasts are often brick or stone; fix the mount with the masonry anchors its maker supplies for that wall, and keep drill holes away from the flue.
Neighbouring sizes
One size down, the 43-inch bodies here are 37.6–37.74 in wide (43-inch above a fireplace). One size up, the 55-inch bodies are 48.2–48.46 in wide and up to 28.23 in tall (55-inch above a fireplace). From a seat 6 ft 9 in away a 50-inch screen fills the SMPTE 30° view; mounting it high doesn't change that distance, but the screen's centre ends up above eye level, so measure from where you sit.
