Will a 50-inch TV fit your TV cabinet?

Standing on its own feet, every 50-inch TV with a published size here fits a cabinet top 44 in wide and 12 in deep; the narrowest needs only 44 in. If the TV goes into an enclosed shelf, the opening has to be at least 28 in tall for the tallest of them on its stand.

50-inch TVs measured on their stands

The figures are each maker's "with stand" dimensions: overall width, height from the cabinet top to the top of the TV, and the depth of the stand's footprint, which is what has to sit on the cabinet. Sorted narrowest first. 7 other 50-inch models on VESA Fit have no published stand size and are not in this table.

Cabinet width: how many fit

A TV can overhang a cabinet slightly if its feet sit near the middle, but the feet on many sets sit near the ends, and the spec tables read here don't give the distance between them. The safe reading is that the cabinet should be at least as wide as the TV. On that basis:

The narrowest on its stand is the TCL 50Q651G at 43.7 in; the widest is the Vizio VQD50R-1007 at 43.8 in. A cabinet narrower than 44 in suits the 43-inch class instead, whose bodies run 37.6–37.74 in (43-inch on a cabinet). The next class up, 55-inch, starts at 48.2 in (55-inch on a cabinet).

Depth of the cabinet top

Stand footprint depth (inches) of each 50-inch TV, from the makers' with-stand dimensions.

Stand depth runs from 9.78 in on the Vizio VQM50C-1010 to 11.7 in on the TCL 50Q651G, a spread of 1.92 in. A shallow media console or a floating shelf is where this bites first: if the cabinet top is shallower than the stand, the feet hang off the front or back edge. In that case the TV belongs on the wall — the wall-size page for 50-inch TVs lists their bodies without the stand, which stand only 2.6–3.22 in deep.

What 50 inches means for furniture

A 50-inch set suits a dresser, a narrow console or a bedroom chest as well as a TV cabinet: at 43.7–43.8 in wide on its stand, it fits furniture that was never sold as a TV unit, provided the top is 12 in deep and level. Light sets like these are also the ones most often knocked over, so use the anti-tip strap many makers supply.

Height inside a shelf or entertainment centre

On their stands these sets stand 27.58 to 27.6 in tall; the tallest is the TCL 50Q651G and the shortest the Vizio VQM50C-1010. Fitting the stand adds up to 2.1 in to the tallest body's height, because the feet lift the panel off the cabinet. For an enclosed opening, add a little room above the TV for air and for reaching the buttons and ports, and check the opening's depth too: a closed back panel can stop the feet from sitting where they need to.
