97-inch TV: dimensions, viewing distance and VESA
A 97-inch 16:9 screen measures 84.5 x 47.6 in (215 x 121 cm) — 311% of the picture area of a 55-inch. Sit about 13 ft 2 in away for everyday viewing (SMPTE 30°) or 9 ft 8 in for a cinema-style view (THX 40°). Of the 2 97-inch models listed here, the most common VESA pattern is 600 x 400 mm (2 models).

Screen dimensions
TV size is the screen's diagonal. For a 16:9 panel the width is 0.8716 times the diagonal and the height 0.4903 times, so a 97-inch screen is 84.5 in wide and 47.6 in tall. The TV itself is larger by its bezel and, on most models, deeper than the panel at the back where the electronics sit; check the maker's "dimensions without stand" before measuring a recess. The step down to 86-inch takes 9.6 in off the width; the step up to 98-inch adds 0.9 in.
| Measure | Inches | Centimetres | Millimetres | Feet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diagonal | 97 | 246 | 2464 | 8.1 |
| Width | 84.5 | 215 | 2147 | 7 |
| Height | 47.6 | 121 | 1208 | 4 |
Actual 97-inch TV dimensions, with frame and stand
The figures above are the picture only. 2 of the 2 97-inch models listed here have a maker's page that prints the body size (LG), and those measurements answer "how big is a 97-inch TV" for a wall, a recess or a stand. Without the stand they measure 84.8 in wide and 48.4 in tall, against 84.5 in for the width of a 16:9 picture with a true 97-inch diagonal. The difference between body width and that figure is not the width of the frame: TVs are sold by a class size, and the visible diagonal can be a few tenths of an inch under it, which leaves room for a wider frame than the difference suggests.
Each is 1.1 in deep at its thickest point. On its stand the TV gains 15.7 in of height and needs 22.8 in of furniture depth, for an overall height of up to 64.1 in. Both 97-inch models weigh 125.7 lb (57.0 kg) without the stand.
| Model | Without stand | With stand | Weight | VESA (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LG OLED97G5WUA | 84.8 x 48.4 x 1.1 | 84.8 x 64.1 x 22.8 | 125.7 lb (57.0 kg) | 600 x 400 |
| LG OLED97G6WUA | 84.8 x 48.4 x 1.1 | 84.8 x 64.1 x 22.8 | 125.7 lb (57.0 kg) | 600 x 400 |

Where a 97-inch TV fits
97 inches is in the very-large class, where TVs compete with projectors. A 97-inch screen is 84.5 by 47.6 inches, needs a heavy-duty mount (patterns of 600 x 400 and above), and is best delivered and installed by two or three people or a professional.
Series available at 97 inches here: LG OLED evo G5, LG OLED evo G6.
How far to sit from a 97-inch TV
| Basis | Distance | In feet | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMPTE 30° (mixed viewing) | 158 in | 13.1 ft | Screen fills a 30° view — the widely quoted everyday figure. |
| THX 40° (cinema) | 116 in | 9.7 ft | A wider 40° view, THX's figure for film. |
| 4K (3840 x 2160) detail limit | 76 in | 6.3 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 4K pixels. |
| 1080p (1920 x 1080) detail limit | 151 in | 12.6 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 1080P pixels. |
| 8K (7680 x 4320) detail limit | 38 in | 3.2 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 8K pixels. |
Read the last rows the right way round. Closer than the 1080p limit (12 ft 7 in), a 1080p picture shows visible pixel structure and 4K looks sharper; farther away, 1080p already reaches the limit of 20/20 vision. Notice where the two standard seats fall: the SMPTE seat (13 ft 2 in) is just beyond the 1080p limit, so at the everyday distance 4K is barely distinguishable from 1080p, while the THX seat (9 ft 8 in) is well inside it, so for a cinema-style view 4K clearly helps. That relationship holds at every size because all three distances scale with the diagonal. 4K's own pixels are only resolvable within 6 ft 4 in, and 8K's within 3 ft 2 in — which is why 8K adds nothing you can see from a sofa.
