Will a 98-inch TV fit above a fireplace?
Without its stand, a 98-inch TV here measures 85.3 to 85.83 in wide and 48.66 to 49.8 in tall, according to the makers' spec pages. A clear patch of wall at least 86 x 50 in above the mantel takes any of the 9; the narrowest, the TCL 98QM8L, needs 85.3 x 48.7 in.
Every 98-inch TV with a published body size
These are the dimensions "without stand" that each maker prints — the box that hangs on the wall. They are listed narrowest first. TCL publishes a full width, height and depth for its 98-inch sets on the pages read for this site; the other 5 98-inch models listed on VESA Fit (LG 98NU850BPUB, Samsung QN98QN990FFXZA, Samsung QN98LS03HEFXZA, Sony K98XR50 and others) have a pattern and weight on record but no body size, so they are left out here.

Width and height on the wall
The spread between the narrowest and widest 98-inch body is 0.53 in: the TCL 98QM8L at 85.3 in against the TCL 98QM6K at 85.83 in. A geometric 98-inch 16:9 picture is 85.4 x 48 in, and the bodies differ from it by their frames and by how each maker rounds its class size. If a chimney breast or built-in shelving limits the width, measure between the obstructions and compare with the width column, not with the screen size.
Height matters as much above a mantel, because the TV's bottom edge has to clear the shelf and anything that stands on it. The tallest 98-inch body here is 49.8 in and the shortest 48.66 in. Add the gap you want between mantel and TV to that figure to get the wall height you need below the ceiling or crown moulding. If the wall is shorter than about 48.66 in, a 85-inch set (bodies up to 43.5 in tall) is the next size down.
What 98 inches means over a mantel
A 98-inch set is a whole-wall TV: up to 85.83 in wide and 49.8 in tall, it covers more wall than many fireplaces' chimney breasts offer, and at up to 151.7 lb the mount, its anchors and the lift above the hearth are professional-install territory. Measure the whole wall, not just the space above the mantel.
How far it stands off the wall
The thinnest body at this size is the TCL 98X11L at 0.8 in deep; the thickest is the TCL 98Q651G at 2.8 in. On a wall mount the TV sits that far out plus the mount's own profile, which the mount maker prints on its box — a fixed or "low-profile" plate adds the least, a tilting or full-motion arm the most. Over a mantel, a tilting mount is the usual way to angle a high screen back toward the seats.
Weight on the chimney wall
Without the stand these sets weigh 115.3 to 151.7 lb, with a median of 121.2 lb; the heaviest is the TCL 98X11K. A mount's rating has to cover the TV's weight, and a full-motion arm needs more margin than a fixed plate because the load sits further from the wall. Chimney breasts are often brick or stone; fix the mount with the masonry anchors its maker supplies for that wall, and keep drill holes away from the flue.
Neighbouring sizes
One size down, the 85-inch bodies here are 74–74.72 in wide (85-inch above a fireplace). From a seat 13 ft 3 in away a 98-inch screen fills the SMPTE 30° view; mounting it high doesn't change that distance, but the screen's centre ends up above eye level, so measure from where you sit.
