32-inch TV: dimensions, viewing distance and VESA
A 32-inch 16:9 screen measures 27.9 x 15.7 in (71 x 40 cm) — 34% of the picture area of a 55-inch. Sit about 4 ft 4 in away for everyday viewing (SMPTE 30°) or 3 ft 2 in for a cinema-style view (THX 40°). Of the 4 32-inch models listed here, the most common VESA pattern is 200 x 200 mm (2 models).
Screen dimensions
TV size is the screen's diagonal. For a 16:9 panel the width is 0.8716 times the diagonal and the height 0.4903 times, so a 32-inch screen is 27.9 in wide and 15.7 in tall. The TV itself is larger by its bezel and, on most models, deeper than the panel at the back where the electronics sit; check the maker's "dimensions without stand" before measuring a recess. The step down to 27-inch takes 4.4 in off the width; the step up to 42-inch adds 8.7 in.
Where a 32-inch TV fits
A 32-inch set is a kitchen, garage, RV or guest-room TV, or a second screen. Most models this small are HD or Full HD rather than 4K — the detail limit for 4K at this size is only 2 ft 1 in, closer than anyone sits — and they weigh little enough that almost any small mount or articulating arm holds them.
Series available at 32 inches here: LG HD LB650, LG HD LR600, LG LR655 Full HD, Sony W830K.
How far to sit from a 32-inch TV
| Basis | Distance | In feet | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMPTE 30° (mixed viewing) | 52 in | 4.3 ft | Screen fills a 30° view — the widely quoted everyday figure. |
| THX 40° (cinema) | 38 in | 3.2 ft | A wider 40° view, THX's figure for film. |
| 4K (3840 x 2160) detail limit | 25 in | 2.1 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 4K pixels. |
| 1080p (1920 x 1080) detail limit | 50 in | 4.2 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 1080P pixels. |
| 8K (7680 x 4320) detail limit | 12 in | 1 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 8K pixels. |
Read the last rows the right way round. Closer than the 1080p limit (4 ft 2 in), a 1080p picture shows visible pixel structure and 4K looks sharper; farther away, 1080p already reaches the limit of 20/20 vision. Notice where the two standard seats fall: the SMPTE seat (4 ft 4 in) is just beyond the 1080p limit, so at the everyday distance 4K is barely distinguishable from 1080p, while the THX seat (3 ft 2 in) is well inside it, so for a cinema-style view 4K clearly helps. That relationship holds at every size because all three distances scale with the diagonal. 4K's own pixels are only resolvable within 2 ft 1 in, and 8K's within 1 ft — which is why 8K adds nothing you can see from a sofa.
