83-inch TV: dimensions, viewing distance and VESA
A 83-inch 16:9 screen measures 72.3 x 40.7 in (184 x 103 cm) — 228% of the picture area of a 55-inch. Sit about 11 ft 3 in away for everyday viewing (SMPTE 30°) or 8 ft 3 in for a cinema-style view (THX 40°). Of the 5 83-inch models listed here, the most common VESA pattern is 400 x 300 mm (2 models).
Screen dimensions
TV size is the screen's diagonal. For a 16:9 panel the width is 0.8716 times the diagonal and the height 0.4903 times, so a 83-inch screen is 72.3 in wide and 40.7 in tall. The TV itself is larger by its bezel and, on most models, deeper than the panel at the back where the electronics sit; check the maker's "dimensions without stand" before measuring a recess. The step down to 77-inch takes 5.2 in off the width; the step up to 85-inch adds 1.7 in.
Where a 83-inch TV fits
83 inches is a big-room TV: 72.3 inches wide, it needs a wall of at least that plus clearance, and it fills the 30° view from 11 ft 3 in. Expect patterns of 400 x 400 to 600 x 400 and weights that call for a two-person lift and a mount fixed into studs or masonry.
Series available at 83 inches here: LG OLED evo W6, Samsung OLED S85H, Samsung OLED S90H, Samsung OLED S95H, Sony BRAVIA 6 OLED.
How far to sit from a 83-inch TV
| Basis | Distance | In feet | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMPTE 30° (mixed viewing) | 135 in | 11.2 ft | Screen fills a 30° view — the widely quoted everyday figure. |
| THX 40° (cinema) | 99 in | 8.3 ft | A wider 40° view, THX's figure for film. |
| 4K (3840 x 2160) detail limit | 65 in | 5.4 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 4K pixels. |
| 1080p (1920 x 1080) detail limit | 130 in | 10.8 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 1080P pixels. |
| 8K (7680 x 4320) detail limit | 32 in | 2.7 ft | Farthest seat where 20/20 eyes still resolve single 8K pixels. |
Read the last rows the right way round. Closer than the 1080p limit (10 ft 10 in), a 1080p picture shows visible pixel structure and 4K looks sharper; farther away, 1080p already reaches the limit of 20/20 vision. Notice where the two standard seats fall: the SMPTE seat (11 ft 3 in) is just beyond the 1080p limit, so at the everyday distance 4K is barely distinguishable from 1080p, while the THX seat (8 ft 3 in) is well inside it, so for a cinema-style view 4K clearly helps. That relationship holds at every size because all three distances scale with the diagonal. 4K's own pixels are only resolvable within 5 ft 5 in, and 8K's within 2 ft 8 in — which is why 8K adds nothing you can see from a sofa.
VESA patterns on 83-inch TVs
2 different patterns appear at this size: 400 x 300 on 2 (50%), 400 x 400 on 2 (50%). Size alone does not tell you the pattern — look up the model. Weights without stand run from 49.6 lb (LG OLED83W6PUA) to 89.3 lb (Samsung QN83S95HAEXZA), median 72.5 lb — a spread wide enough that a mount rated for one 83-inch TV may not hold another.
| Model | Series | VESA (mm) | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| LG OLED83W6PUA | OLED evo W6 | Not published | 49.6 lb |
| Samsung QN83S85HAEXZA | OLED S85H | 400 x 300 mm | 72.5 lb |
| Samsung QN83S90HAEXZA | OLED S90H | 400 x 300 mm | 82.9 lb |
| Samsung QN83S95HAEXZA | OLED S95H | 400 x 400 mm | 89.3 lb |
| Sony K83A60 | BRAVIA 6 OLED | 400 x 400 mm | 57.1 lb |
